Disaster Services

In addition to our primary role connecting Orange County residents to the help they need, 2-1-1 Orange County is involved in local disaster planning, response and recovery. 2-1-1 is a simple, easily remembered telephone number set aside by the Federal Communications Commission for the public’s use in accessing community services 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. The need for such services often increases dramatically during and following disasters.

2-1-1 Orange County and our 2-1-1 partner agencies throughout California work together closely to ensure that 2-1-1 information services remain available during a local or state emergency -- while simultaneously meeting extraordinary needs for disaster-related information and services. We work closely with the Orange County Emergency Management Organization to provide essential information to county residents in the event of a local or state emergency. We also maintain close working relationships with Orange County Red Cross and the Orange County Health Care Agency.

2-1-1 Orange County serves as a member of the Leadership Council of COAD-OC, Collaborating Organization Active in Disaster, a network of community, faith-based and government organizations that provide help during and after disasters. COAD-OC's role is to enhance partnerships among community and government based organizations to collaborate, communicate and coordinate efforts in Orange County during times of disaster.

2-1-1 Orange County provided much needed information during recent Southern California disasters. For example, during the devastating Southern California wildfires in 2007, 2-1-1 OC answered 3,283 disaster-related calls and provided information regarding evacuation routes and shelters, school closures, and health advisories. During the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, 2-1-1 Orange County assisted over 1,500 callers with information regarding vaccination sites.
